Our Timbers
We specialise in using Australian hardwood timbers, why - because they are
one of the fascinating aspects of our natural world here in Australia that
generally people are still largely unaware of.
They're tough, dense and beautiful. We have so many species of eucalypts in
this country, all with different colours and appearances, and these
characteristics vary within each species, depending on the conditions they
grow in.
The timbers we mainly offer are a combination of local timbers (around the
Riverina district) such as red gum, red ironbark and
red stringybark, which despite it's name isn't very red.
We also have alpine ash from up in the mountains around
Tumbarumba and timbers from the south coast of NSW such as spotted
gum and blackbutt.
We have other species from time to time such as southern
mahogany, again from the south coast and then from up in the
mountains we have some timbers commonly known as narrow leaf
peppermint and mountain gum or otherwise known as
eucalyptus radiata and eucalyptus dalrympleana.
In addition to eucalypts we also love to use some of the
casuarinas such as river sheoak when ever
we can get onto some. These timbers are also very dense and very beautiful
Australian hardwoods.
Two species were often asked about are blackwood and
jarrah. Blackwood isn't a eucalypt as some people think, it
belongs to the acacia family and is reasonably soft, in my opinion too soft
to make a durable everyday use table from. For people who have a kitchen
made from blackwood we find that it's really not difficult to find one of
our other species that is similar in colour to what's found in the timber
in their kitchen and besides like most timbers blackwood can be very
different in colour from one batch (or tree) to the next so matching the
timber in a kitchen at anytime can be nearly impossible sometimes.
